The best caravan trip-planning system in Australia usually combines a route map, a campsite directory and current official road information. Choose each tool for the job it does. A campsite filter, a downloaded map and routing that accounts for vehicle dimensions are different capabilities.

For most beginners, a practical starting point is a familiar navigator for directions, WikiCamps for researching stops, and road-authority and park checks for each leg. Add detailed offline mapping where the route requires it. No app establishes that a road is open or suitable for your caravan.
Choose by the planning job
- Navigation: directions between places, with the routing options the app actually supports.
- Campsite directory: places, facilities, contact details and traveller reports.
- Itinerary planning: ordering stops, allowing time and organising bookings.
- Vehicle-specific routing: a route calculated using relevant dimensions or restrictions, subject to the provider’s data and limitations.
- Offline mapping: downloaded maps that remain available without reception; this does not automatically include offline route calculation or current warnings.
Caravan route-planner comparison
Provider information checked on 5 September 2026. Prices below are AUD and relate to the stated product and platform. This is a review of public documentation, not a field test or a ranking guarantee.
| Tool | Useful for | Offline and routing limits | Price checked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Maps | General directions and finding towns and services. | Downloaded areas support offline driving directions within coverage. No live traffic or alternative routes offline. The reviewed help does not document a caravan height, length and weight routing profile. | No separate consumer app subscription. |
| WikiCamps Australia | Campsites, facilities, trip stops and itineraries. | Provider documents offline maps and access to up to three planned trips. A campsite suitability filter is not proof of dimension-based road routing. | $9.99 once per platform, iOS or Android. |
| Hema 4WD Maps — iPhone/iPad app | Detailed map context, waypoints and recording tracks. | Developer lists offline maps and GPS tracking. It is not presented here as caravan-clearance routing. Check device GPS capability and map dates. | $99.99 on the Australian App Store; additional purchases available. |
| OzTravel Atlas | Browser-based trip planning; provider advertises dimension-aware routing on Traveller. | Provider pages disagree about whether offline packs are available or planned. Do not rely on offline support without confirming and testing it. | Free tier; Traveller advertised at $29/year. Other plan details differ between official pages. |
Google Maps: a familiar starting point
Use Google Maps to locate places and develop an initial route. Its directions guidance describes route choices, but the help reviewed does not establish routing based on your caravan’s dimensions. Avoid assuming the shortest or fastest suggestion suits a long towing combination.
Google’s offline instructions say driving directions can work when the whole route lies within the downloaded area. Traffic information and alternative routes are unavailable offline. Download the complete leg and likely alternatives before leaving coverage.
Look closely at the final approach to a caravan park. Confirm its vehicle entrance directly with the operator; a destination pin may point to reception or an unsuitable access road. Check bridge, ferry, road and site restrictions independently.
WikiCamps: researching where to stop
WikiCamps Australia combines a touring directory with trip planning. Its public information describes campsite and facility filters, notes, custom pins, route and fuel estimates, and offline access. The current price is a one-off $9.99 per platform, so using both iOS and Android can require separate purchases.
Read recent reports and check dates, but confirm critical details with the operator or land manager. A listing with water, fuel or a “caravan suitable” description does not guarantee current supply, access or space for your exact rig.
Before travelling, download the maps and trips you need and test access without reception. The provider’s FAQ describes offline access to up to three planned trips; do not assume every trip in your account will automatically be available.
Hema: choose the exact product
Hema’s older Explorer and Explorer Pro information should not be treated as a current purchase recommendation. Hema’s official product explanation says Explorer is no longer sold to new users; its current support directory labels it a legacy app.
The Hema 4WD Maps Australian App Store listing is a different product. It offers offline maps, waypoints and track recording for iPhone and iPad. Its listed $99.99 purchase includes the core Hema map library, with other maps available separately. This price is specific to that listing, not every Hema app or navigator.
Check map publication dates as well as app update dates. Hema’s 4WD Maps support guidance identifies the map collection as the 2022 package, with some individual maps older. Detailed terrain mapping remains a planning aid; verify current closures, restrictions and road conditions elsewhere.
Confirm that your device can determine its location without mobile coverage. The developer specifically distinguishes Wi-Fi-only iPads from models with built-in GPS. Do not buy a mapping product assuming every tablet has the same capability.
OzTravel Atlas: verify the advertised capability
OzTravel Atlas advertises routes based on rig height, weight and length on its Traveller plan. That is a provider claim, not an independently verified guarantee about clearance, data coverage or route safety.
Its HeliPal product page says offline trip and map packs are on the roadmap. Its Atlas page says they work now and describes different plan inclusions. Both advertise Traveller at $29/year. Confirm the current checkout terms and the exact offline and routing features before subscribing.
Test it on a route you know, check the vehicle inputs and compare the result with official information. Until the offline discrepancy is resolved and tested on your device, use another verified offline map option for travel without reception.
Build a caravan itinerary in six passes
- Choose the broad route and season. Record must-see places, fixed commitments, permits and seasonal access concerns.
- Check the combination and roads. Know actual height, overall length and relevant loaded masses. Consult road authorities, councils and land managers for restrictions.
- Add reliable services. Confirm fuel, water, waste disposal and suitable overnight options. Add alternatives rather than relying on one point.
- Split it into realistic travel days. Include breaks, roadworks, fuel stops, camp access and setup. Leave time for a change of plan.
- Prepare offline access and communication. Download, test and record the plan where you can reach it without a signal. Share check-in arrangements with a trusted person.
- Recheck before every leg. Weather, fire, flood, closures and local access can change after a route is saved.
For WA travel, Main Roads Travel Map is one official source. Use the corresponding authority for every jurisdiction on your route and check park or local-road notices where applicable. Roadside restrictions and directions take priority over a saved route.
Test offline use before it matters
While safely parked, download the required area and enable flight mode. Check whether you can open the map, locate your position, view saved stops and retrieve operator details. Then test the capability you actually need: a saved route, fresh driving directions or rerouting. They are not interchangeable.
Keep essential addresses, contacts and decisions outside a single app, with a suitable map backup. Plan charging and device storage. A cached warning is not a live warning once the connection is gone.
Turn distance into a workable day
Use the realistic caravan travel-day guide to add breaks and setup time. Do not increase the assumed speed to make an overlong itinerary fit. Fatigue or deteriorating conditions are reasons to stop or shorten the day.
Use the remote fuel-stop guide and Remote Fuel Range Calculator to test service spacing. A route’s fuel-cost estimate does not prove you have enough fuel to reach the next reliable supply.
Run through the Remote Caravan Travel Checklist before a remote leg. For the wider itinerary and budget, use the Big Lap planning hub and budget calculator. The Australian Touring Planner provides a separate way to organise trip days and decisions.
