First Caravan Trip Checklist: Setup, Practice and a Close-to-Home Trial

Practical Australian caravan guidance

Your first caravan trip should be a systems test, not an endurance event. A short destination close to home gives you time to practise coupling, towing, site setup, water, power, cooking and pack-down without turning every problem into an emergency.

One to two weeks before departure

  • Confirm registration, insurance, roadside assistance and booking conditions.
  • Review the tow vehicle, caravan, tyre, coupling, brake-controller and appliance manuals.
  • Check the loaded combination and remaining weight margins.
  • Test lights, brakes, breakaway equipment, smoke alarm, fire extinguisher and fire blanket.
  • Run the fridge, water pump, hot water, toilet, charging system, solar monitoring and gas appliances according to their instructions.
  • Practise coupling and uncoupling in daylight on level ground.

Practise before adding traffic pressure

Use a suitable legal practice area and a competent instructor where needed. Rehearse slow turns, mirror use, braking distance, lane position, reversing, spotting and clear communication between driver and guide. Agree on one set of hand signals and stop whenever either person loses sight or confidence.

Choose the first route deliberately

Keep the drive short, avoid arriving after dark and allow time for a wrong turn or slow setup. Review road, weather and emergency information before leaving. In bushfire-prone areas, check current warnings and the site’s emergency arrangements. WA’s Department of Fire and Emergency Services advises travellers to check road conditions and carry appropriate caravan fire-safety equipment; use the equivalent current authority in the state or territory you are visiting.

Departure walk-around

  • Coupling correctly seated, locked and checked.
  • Safety chains, electrical lead and breakaway connection fitted correctly.
  • Jockey wheel and stabilisers raised and secured.
  • Gas and appliances set for travel as required by their instructions.
  • Doors, windows, hatches, awning, steps and loose items secured.
  • Tyres visually checked and pressures set cold to the manufacturer’s guidance.
  • Lights, indicators, brakes and mirrors checked.
  • Final 360-degree walk-around completed by the driver.

At the site

Pause before reversing. Inspect the site for overhead branches, services, soft ground, slope, fire restrictions and escape access. Use wheel chocks before unhitching. Follow the caravan and appliance instructions for levelling, stabilising, gas, electricity, water and wastewater connections.

Use the trip as a controlled review

Keep a simple list of what was missing, unused, awkward, unsafe or unclear. Separate urgent safety corrections from comfort purchases. Do not buy every suggested accessory after one inconvenience. At home, review the load, storage position, setup order, travel timing and maintenance tasks before the second trip.
