Full-time caravan travel is easier when you design the operating system before giving up the systems that currently support you. The caravan matters, but sustainable travel also depends on cash flow, administration, health, education, maintenance, relationships and a practical exit plan.
Test the lifestyle in stages
Take progressively longer trips in the van and with the tow vehicle you intend to use. Track setup fatigue, storage conflict, sleep, work, cooking, wet-weather living, internet, privacy and how often you move. A layout that works for a weekend can feel very different after six weeks.
Build three budgets
- Establishment: caravan and vehicle, inspections, registration, insurance, modifications, equipment, storage changes and departure costs.
- Monthly travel: fuel, sites, food, gas, internet, attractions, laundry, healthcare, subscriptions and day-to-day repairs.
- Reserves: servicing, tyres, major repairs, accommodation during breakdowns, emergency travel home and an exit or replacement fund.
Model slow and fast travel. More kilometres usually mean more fuel, wear and paid overnight stops. Record actual spending during trial trips and update assumptions before making irreversible decisions.
Create an administration base
Confirm your residential and postal arrangements, electoral enrolment, driver licence, vehicle registration, insurance, banking, tax, superannuation, wills, powers of attorney and document storage. Requirements vary by jurisdiction and personal circumstances. Obtain legal, tax, financial and insurance advice where needed rather than assuming a mail-forwarding address solves every issue.
Plan health and prescriptions
Prepare summaries, scripts, vaccination records, medication storage, emergency contacts and options for regular care. Understand how far you may be from urgent services and what your communications plan can and cannot do. Travel insurance, ambulance cover and private health arrangements have different conditions; read the documents rather than relying on a headline.
Families need an education decision early
Home education, school enrolment and distance education are governed through state and territory systems. Eligibility and residence rules can differ. Contact the relevant education authority and your current school early, document the approved arrangement and build the daily routine around the child—not only the travel route.
Set a maintenance rhythm
Schedule vehicle and caravan servicing, tyre and wheel checks, seals, brakes, bearings, gas, electrical and appliance tasks according to current manufacturer and professional guidance. Keep digital copies of receipts, manuals, weights, photographs and fault records. Book specialist work before remote legs or peak travel periods.
Protect relationships and create an exit plan
Agree how travel days, money, work, quiet time, chores and route decisions will be handled. Define what would cause you to pause, store or sell the van, and keep enough money and documentation to act. An exit plan is not pessimism; it prevents a difficult month from becoming a crisis.
