Off-grid capability is not a label on a caravan. It is the number of days your power, water, waste, food, communications and maintenance systems can support your real daily use—with a reserve for poor weather, delays and equipment failure.
Start with an energy audit
List every 12-volt and 240-volt load, its power draw and realistic hours of use. Refrigeration, lights and device charging are usually steady background loads; inverters, coffee machines, induction cooking, air-conditioning and heating can create high short-term demand. Battery capacity and maximum discharge output solve different problems, so check both.
Estimate usable battery energy, not only the advertised capacity. Then compare average daily consumption with realistic solar and alternator charging in the places and seasons you will travel. Shade, cloud, heat, panel angle, dust and short driving days can reduce recovery.
Design for consecutive poor days
A system that balances on a perfect sunny day has no resilience. Decide which loads are essential, useful and optional. Create a low-power routine before you need it. Monitor state of charge and daily generation so a trend is visible early.
Electrical and battery work can present fire, shock and equipment risks. Use appropriately licensed and qualified professionals, compliant equipment and the caravan and component manufacturers’ instructions. The Australian Government’s battery guidance explains the distinction between stored capacity and power output and recommends checking safety, standards, warranty and support. Caravan installations have their own design and compliance context, so do not treat household guidance as an installation specification.
Calculate water from measured daily use
Record drinking, cooking, washing, toilet and cleaning use for several normal days. Divide usable onboard water by realistic daily consumption, then keep an emergency reserve separate. Confirm where potable water, dump points and legal wastewater disposal are available. Treat unknown water using an appropriate tested method and follow health advice.
Plan communications in layers
- Mobile service where coverage exists.
- Offline maps and saved emergency information.
- A trip plan left with a responsible contact, including check-in and escalation times.
- Satellite-enabled communication or a registered distress beacon appropriate to the trip and used according to its instructions.
- Local radio channels and emergency broadcasts where relevant.
No single device replaces route planning, current road and weather checks, spare capacity and a person who knows when to raise the alarm.
Remote readiness includes the caravan itself
Inspect tyres, bearings, suspension, underbody, plumbing, wiring, dust sealing and fasteners before remote travel. Carry compatible spares and the tools and knowledge to use them safely. Check road access restrictions, permit conditions, seasonal closures, fuel availability, fire danger and evacuation options immediately before departure.
WA’s Department of Fire and Emergency Services advises caravan travellers to check road conditions and local bushfire plans and to maintain fire-safety equipment. Use the current emergency and road authorities for every jurisdiction on your route.
